Bridging the housing deficit in Lagos through PPP

The need for mass housing to meet rising demand, particularly from the growing younger demography, cannot be overstated.

With its teeming population and daily influx of people, Lagos State accounts for a significant portion of Nigeria’s estimated 17 million housing deficit. The need for mass housing to meet rising demand, particularly from the growing younger demography, cannot be overstated. Meeting the housing needs of the lower middle class remains an arduous task. The last three years, aligning with its policy direction and through direct budgetary allocation and partnerships with the private sector, have seen the Lagos State Government deliver 16 housing projects with 3,034 housing units across various parts of the State.

The elusive nature of housing affordability has continued to trigger deepened collaborations between the state government and private developers. Creating an enabling environment for a thriving public-private partnership housing model will go a long way toward bringing desired results. The provision of supporting transport infrastructure, the introduction of affordable mortgages, and the active participation of stakeholders in the housing sector can change the narrative for the Lagos housing market.
